YEAR: 2010-2012
ROLE: Director, Named Applicant
WITH: James Muller, Natalie Jeremijenko, Tony Fry , SCANZ2011 Eco sapiens, Leah Barclay and others.
PARTNERS: Australia Council InterArts Office, The Edge, NYU Environmental Health Clinic, QUT CI, Scanz, UTS/Participatory Design Conference, Art Center Nabi (Korea), WITT NZ , Earthbase Productions & Embodiedmedia, with advisory board Epidemiology/Public Health M.D.s Dr A. Jeremijenko and researcher in University of Queensland School of Population Health. Dr. Julie Dean.
WHAT: The REMNANT/EMERGENCY (Ecological Health) CLINIC, funded by the Australia Council InterArts ArtLab Program, involves 22 months of rigorous research and experimentation between a ‘rapid response’ team of international ‘ecological health’ workers based in three countries (Australia, USA and New Zealand) – who are also practicing media artists, designers and engineers. Together we assert that today’s environmental crisis is underpinned by a deep cultural crisis - and so to get our ‘house in order’ we urgently need to create better and more powerful ‘images’ of what a ‘citizen-led’, sustainable world might be. Our ArtLab’s core aim is therefore to begin to understand how to develop and create such ‘powerful images’.

PEOPLE: X-pat consultant Jeremijenko (AUS/USA) brings an existing and sophisticated approach to Clinic Design that has been successfully deployed in recent years around the world - but as yet not in Australia. As our most experienced artist experimenter or clinician she will conduct high level training sessions at her dedicated lab at NYU in New York City and also here in Australasia - including further prepping of trainees who will be based at the The Edge in Brisbane. More recent ‘impatients’ and willing ‘clinicians’ located in Queensland (Armstrong, Muller, Barclay) and New Zealand (Scanz New Media Network) will gain much from this ‘induction’. In return we bring to the creative mix a deep knowledge of both local states of environmental health as well as a special sensitivity to the particular cultural forces that shape our lives here today. This difficult but rewarding process will be aided by future physician and declared ‘impatient’ Armstrong (AUS) who brings his long practice in ecosophical media arts practice and Design Doctor Tony Fry (AUS) who adds a substantial and senior voice to our team through his world renowned Design and Re-Futuring practices. We will be greatly assisted and further challenged by arts, technical and environmental science students dedicated to the project, situated both here in Australia and the USA.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
